All Aboard the Snack Express!

Some foods are delicious. Some foods become memories. Train food somehow manages to be both. Reading about railway meals instantly took me back to childhood journeys where the excitement began long before reaching the destination. The changing scenery outside mattered, but so did what arrived inside the compartment—flasks of tomato soup, foil-packed biryani, station snacks wrapped in paper, and the unmistakable smell of cutlets and chai at every halt. Indian train food was never just about eating. It was about waiting for a specific station, spotting a familiar vendor, opening steel tiffins from home, and sometimes sharing food with strangers who felt familiar by the end of the ride. The trains may have changed, but the nostalgia travels with us.

Some journeys are remembered entirely through taste.

Veg Chop

Crispy outside and soft within, these beetroot and potato cutlets from Kharagpur station became one of the most nostalgic railway snacks for generations travelling between Kolkata, Jamshedpur, and beyond.

Tomato Soup

Served hot in flasks with floating croutons, railway tomato soup turned long train rides into comforting rituals, especially on Rajdhani journeys, where it felt surprisingly luxurious and memorable.

Puri and Rasse Wala Aloo

Found across station platforms in north India, this spicy potato curry with puffed puris became a filling, affordable meal that travellers still remember for its comforting flavours and quick service.

Railway Mutton Curry

Cooked in mustard oil with potatoes and mild spices, railway mutton curry remains one of India’s most recreated train dishes, celebrated for its simple flavours and deep nostalgia factor.

Thepla

Packed lovingly in steel dabbas for long journeys, thepla became more than travel food. It represented sharing, community, and the comfort of homemade meals passed across train compartments.

Train journeys may be faster today, but certain flavours still carry the same emotional weight. A station snack, a soup flask, or a shared homemade meal can still turn an ordinary trip into a memory that lasts for decades.
